Triage:
A process for sorting injured people into groups based on their need for or
likely benefit from immediate medical treatment. Triage is used in hospital
emergency rooms, on battlefields, and at disaster sites when limited medical
resources must be allocated.
I found this door plaque odd when I was at the
doctor’s office the other day so I snapped a photo of it with my cell phone.
I got this funny picture in
my head of a nurse in the room where a conveyor belt full of people lying on
their backs comes in from some outside arrival point. The nurse is standing
over them as each person passed by. They people get slapped with one of two
stamps: “Ship Out” or “Received for Care”.
Ever notice how Jesus
performed triage? I cannot think of a single time he shipped people out or
referred them to another doctor. I cannot think of a single time when people
came in from the battlefield of life that he said: They can’t be helped. What
we do see is Jesus going into the disaster sites of our lives. I think of disaster
triage Jesus performed in the life of Zacchaeus, the woman at the well, the
lepers, the man lowered through the roof by friends, Jairus in pain over the
death of his daughter, Mary and Martha grieving about their brothers passing
and many more.
I see Jesus seeking us out
and without limits in the midst of triage he dispenses his grace and love to
us. Easter was last month. We remember he ascended into heaven and yet he is
still with us. Jesus is still dispensing his grace and love to us. We are his
hands and feet. We are the body of Christ in a world where people are on triage
conveyor belts. Jesus asks us simply to receive
them for care, receive them as they are because he did the same for us.
Jesus’ triage is simple: love them all as we have been loved. Easier said than
done but with God all things are….POSSIBLE!
Reminder: beginning Wednesday April 3rd we start a worship
service at 6:30pm. If you cannot make the weekend come to the Wednesday worship
and receive… TRIAGE by JESUS!!
Jesus came knowing we were all dead.
